Showdown

It's surprising it doesn't happen more often: a bajaj and a box truck both tried to negotiate the same narrow corner behind Palmerah Market, and each was blocking the other. The truck eventually backed down, which was also surprising -- usually size trumps all other considerations on Jakarta roadways.

if this were in boston, these drivers would be yelling and cursing at each other...

what's the scene like between dueling drivers in jakarta?

I couldn't hear what they were saying, but it seemed pretty laid-back. They weren't standing outside the vehicles screaming at each other, which, you're right, is certainly what would have happened in Boston.

In general, drivers here are remarkably patient and forgiving, which is the only thing that makes it possible to get around at all.
