Dadlands: The razor's edge

 Barber, Da Nang
I stopped writing for a while to go to 1200 Mass, get a haircut and have lunch. The Vietnamese barber that cut my hair was less than 5 feet tall. They make me a little nervous when they get out the razor. Many of the barbers working at our bases in Vietnam have turned out to be Viet Cong.  --Dec. 29 Tuy Hoa

YAY! You're blogging again. I love this pic. I think that the picture on the wall of the uber-cool hair dude in the shabby surrounds really sets it off :)

I have loved reading this series about your dad's letters. Good storytelling must run in your family :)

Thanks Ash! I do hear a lot of my Dad in my writing. He was reading pretty serious stuff at the time -- Somerset Maugham, F. Scott Fitzgerald, even a whack at Joyce's "Ulysses". So he had good inspirations.

I loved your post about the becak driver in Banda Aceh. The tsunami is still so real there. I remember the sense that there were tragic stories at every turn, and that my natural desire to ask questions always ran the risk of treading on somebody's pain.
