Junk food of the week: Green goo

Green goo is actually srikaya jam, a custardy sort of spread made from coconut milk and egg. The color comes from pandan (also known as screwpine) leaf , a favorite dessert flavoring in Southeast Asia.

Pandan jam is thick, rich and sweet and pretty much tastes like coconut cream pie.

If you put it on a piece of bread, as the drawing on the label suggests, you have an open-faced coconut cream pie sandwich. That's probably somebody's idea of the perfect lunch, but not mine, since I'm not a big coconut fan. I think I'll keep the rest of the jar around, though; it might come in handy if we decide to shoot a low-budget sci-fi flick or turn our apartment into a haunted house for Halloween.

or, you could send the rest of the jar to me! I *love* coconut cream pie, mmmm......

by the way, does that stuff glow in the dark? it really looks like it could.

excellent choice for a "JFOTW" post! it's both visually and ingredient-ly interesting.

While the recommended serving suggestion may be a delicate scraping on toast, I think the most EFFECTIVE delivery method is by injection into donut. (Though all the srikaya donuts I've ever eaten have been yellow goop, which is possibly even less appealing.)

Ah, srikaya jam. My favourite spread from my childhood. Where I spent my childhood, they sold home-industry made srikaya jam a very small plastic container, (maybe... about 200 ml? smaller than a small cup), and they raise the bottom SO high, about 1/4 of the container.

So it's kind of a delicacy to me. I only spread it very thinly in a slice of bread, hoping that it'd last one more day, one more day.

Of course now I can buy a big package of it easily, and I even EAT IT WITHOUT BREAD! Something that my child self wouldn't dare to imagine, heh.

Oh, anyway, I've read this blog for about a year, and I guess it's about time to post some comment. One of the funnest blog I've ever read.

Sorry. Poor in, he was left by his friends...

And I agree that those green srikaya jam will make a VERY good halloween accessories. Only problem is, they kinda smell too good...

Thanks Faris, I'm touched! I think I've seen those 200 ml cups; they sound like the ones they sell that delicious and very fattening chocolate-and-peanut-butter stuff in. I'm glad you can afford your fill of srikaya now; I suppose that's one definition of success, eh?

I agree with you on the donuts, Shelley, as long as you don't mean the smoked beef and cheese kind.

And as for you, Michele, there's plenty of green goo waiting for you here. Just come and get it!
