The recreational reading rate is supposed to be low in Indonesia, so it was nice to see a big crowd turn out for Jakarta's annual book fair. Nice, that is, until I had to fight my way through them to get the book I wanted.

Trish, I don't think the recreational reading rate here in Indonesia is low :) If you come to the book rentals (but not to district libabries who do not update their book collections), you will see a lot of rent history in their logbooks. The problem in most of Indoensian pepople is in the funding to buy books.
Yes, I don't know firsthand, I just remember reading various articles about the reading rate in the Jakarta Post. I think the obvious popularity of teen books also suggests people, especially young ones, are reading.
I wonder how high is the tax rate for books there. In Peru, for example, there are up to 3 diferent taxes related to book sales/importation. This is in part why we find people in the streets selling pirate copies of notorious books even the day of their release.
I'm not sure about the tax rates, Jose, but there's certainly pirating. Some of the most pirated books are Indonesian/English dictionaries and other reference works. And, of course, The DaVinci Code.
