Language kids

It happens: one minute you're seeing the sights, and the next minute you ARE the sight.

This English-language class was hanging around the Garden hoping to talk to foreigners, so we chatted with them for a while. It was a big group, maybe 30 kids, about evenly divided between boys and girls. Most of them want to be a pilot, a movie star, a doctor, or the President (it was a actually a girl who said President, which was cool). Their favorite movie is "Cars," the Pixar flick. They were pretty cute.

wow, how do you think "pilot" got into the mix? that's pretty impressive. when i was little the standard set of career goals was veterinarian, ballerina, doctor, rock star/actress. not necessarily in that order.

Yeah, I thought that was funny, too. And I haven't seen any air force recruiting commercials here, like the ones they have in the states.

Personally I wanted to be a jockey or a novelist. I guess novelist ended up being closer to the mark.

there was this little guy in the place where we usually sat around and had philosophy class. when asked what he wants to be, he said he wanted to be God.

that was really impressive.

Ya gotta like those kids that want to be pilots. Only thing better would be to play left field for the Sox.

Ya, and they don't even really know what left field is, nevermind the Red Sox, so that means being a pilot is pretty much in a class of coolness all by itself. You should come talk to them, Jim - I'm sure they'd be thrilled to meet a real fighter pilot!

That happened to us in Bukittingi, which, according to my guidebook, is 'full' of foreigners (actually we only saw 3 others in 4 days). It was childrens' day and parents had their kids sit next to us so they could take photos. At one point a dad pushed his kids out of the way, squeezed in between us, and put his arms around our shoulders so his wife could take a snap.
The crowds got a little claustrophobic after about 30 mins of this, though....
